Connect with John Pick, Founder of The Snowball Party

VIVE LA is all about making connections! That’s why we were so excited to meet John Pick, founder of The Snowball Party, a shared experience that allows you to discover your city in a fresh, new way. Snowball events are a different kind of night out, where you are active and engaged in your surroundings and enjoying a tribal experience with your fellow Snowballers. Snowball will get you out of your head, out of your car, and off of your phone. Take some of the analog, mix it with the digital, and emerge with a one-of-a-kind experience. Who doesn’t want that!

John lives at Sienna on Sanborn, a VIVE LA community located at the heart of Sunset Junction, between Silver Lake and Echo Park.

Please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?

I moved to LA to write, act, create. I did a lot of theater initially, and then started making my own videos. When YouTube started, I began making my own comedy. That led me to create a series called The Best of Craigslist, which I produced for Funny or Die and TruTV. I created a bunch of stuff on instinct, and just followed that instinct, like there’s a spark and then you gotta put logs on that fire.

We love the name The Snowball Party! Tell us more about your company and what inspired you to choose this path.

I started The Snowball Party as an instinct. It was a resistance to forces going on in my life: living in LA but being from Chicago; the onslaught of the Internet and its disconnectivity; and the entertainment industry – the fact that no one seems to care unless you can offer them something. I wanted to deepen the way we connect.  I wanted to create an experience where you had to embrace someone you met and not judge them. And that it could lead to something tribal. Snowball Party events are full of adventure, like a scavenger hunt. How did you come up with this concept?

I was at a wrap party for a web series that I was an extra for, looking around and feeling disconnected. Then I spitballed the idea with a stranger in the corner over a Blue Moon, who said “That’s a pretty good idea.” Then I told my friends and they agreed. We did it, and there was an energy that was electric.

It’s great to pursue your passion, but we know it’s not always easy. Tell us about your challenges and successes.

I’ve had a lot of challenges. I’ve put my body and soul on the line a few times. I think I try to seek balance.

What are you most proud of as a company, and what sets you apart?

We’re doing something that society needs, and it’s subtle. I’ve had people come up to me at events and said it was the best time they ever had – and they mean it.

Let’s get out the crystal ball – what does the future hold and what are your next steps?

Working hard.  Building.  But staying healthy.  Snowball is about to relaunch, so making sure that is amazing.

What advice can you give to other folks who are chasing their dream?

Don’t chase. Be. Do. And things will come to you. Talk about your ideas, it will give them strength. Hear what people think. Don’t be afraid to get real advice. Develop a routine. Be disruptive. There’s a lot of systems in place, and if they don’t always work, move on.

As you know, Sienna on Sanborn is one of our VIVE LA neighborhoods? What attracted you to Sienna and what do you love about the neighborhood?

Sienna is a great building in a cool neighborhood with a high walk score.  The residents are nice and friendly. Who could ask for more!
